Utricularia Graminifolia is a popular carpeting plant! UG for short, this unique bladderwort is a carnivorous plant that can be spotted growing in marginal conditions in the wild. This gives it the ability to thrive fully submerged in a planted aquarium or above water in terrarium and paludarium-like setups. Be aware, Utricularia Graminifolia is considered a more advanced aquarium plant since it can be temperamental.
You’ll find plenty of methods and differing opinions on the best way to grow UG. These include nutrient-poor substrates, soft water and varying light exposures. We find that it grows best for us using the dry start method (DSM). Because it doesnt have a root system, giving it time to grow over itself is important. It provides that iconic carpet plant look and establishes a hold in the substrate to prevent floating when flooding the tank. From there, we strongly recommend moderate to high CO2 levels to maintain growth. If successful, UG becomes easy to grow and does not demand more than it gives. It also feeds on small insects or aquatic organisms. It is a tropical species and does not go through dormant periods!
